If we're talking Chilean music history, you won't find bigger names than Víctor Jarra and Violeta Parra. The former was killed by Pinochet's dictatorship in 1973, the latter commiting suicide in 1967. Chilean filmmaker Andrés Wood, who has already enjoyed a big success with "Historias de fútbol" and "Machuca", directed "Violeta Se Fue a Los Cielos", based on a book by Parra's son, the great guitar player Ángel.
The movie tells an intimate story about the singer and artist, who inspired almost every musician that came after her in Chile, and internationally, like Caetano Veloso, Joan Baez, Robert Wyatt and even Devendra Banhart. It also explores how she showed art in Paris's Louvre, and how she traveled the country to find new talent.
Francisca Galván takes the role of Violeta's character in an intimate performance. This long-awaited movie premieres on August 11, and will be one of the most talked about local films to be released in 2011.
